Neptune’s Garden, A Dining Treat

Located in the Pacific Beach Hotel (2490 Kalakaua Avenue), Neptune’s Garden, is a must try for locals and tourists alike. Although the restaurant does not have an outside view, the large aquarium is a draw and a plus.

The Pacific Beach Hotel is a special place for me because my husband Ron proposed to me at the Oceanarium Restaurant. Last night we had Girl’s Night Out at the other restaurant in the hotel, Neptune’s Garden. Interestingly, none of us had been to Neptune’s for dinner so we really didn’t know what to expect. We got there a few minutes early while the staff were having their briefing.

We were the first to be seated. We had a nice view of the “oceanarium.” After perusing the menu, we all decided on the Chef’s Tasting Menu which is a deal for $29.95. It included a choice of soup or baby green salad, entree, and Chef’s Dessert. The entree choices included seafood fettucine alfredo, rib eye steak, chicken Oscar, vegetable platter, steak Diane, or a fresh island catch.

I ordered the cream of asparagus soup with crab and the rib eye steak. Two of my friends ordered the steak Diane and the other chose the fresh catch which was ono or wahoo. Each entree came with either white rice or garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables.

Rolls and lavosh were quickly served with a salmon cream cheese spread which was different and delicious. Butter was also available upon request.

The meal last night was perfect. The cream of asparagus soup was hot, smooth, tasty, and rich with bits of asparagus for texture. My rib eye was served on a sizzling plate with butter. My sides were garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Everything was cooked perfectly and so delicious. I wasn’t able to finish all my steak and mashed potatoes so I asked to have my leftovers boxed.

The portions last night were not small by any means. The rib eye and beef tenderloins were 12 ounces each. Both my friends who had the steak Diane raved about the Bordelaise Sauce. Juliette wasn’t able to finish her two pieces of ono.

The Chef’s Dessert was a petite chocolate macadamia nut tart with fruits on the side which we all enjoyed.

At 7 p.m. we were treated to the live music of Bruce Hamada & Jim Howard. Jim played keyboard and Bruce bass .

I highly recommend Neptune’s Restaurant and the Chef’s Tasting Menu for locals and tourists. The staff is pleasant and attentive and the food good. It was interesting that last night there were several local, larger parties celebrating different events. There isn’t a sunset or oceanview but the oceanarium can be quite captivating.
