First impressions aren’t always right. Surprisingly good is the term used to describe the food at Islands. Located on Hookipa Terrace at the Ala Moana Center, Islands has been in existence since 1982.
Hubby Ron has been trying to get me to go to Island for a long time. We went there when they first opened at Ala Moana Center and I wasn’t impressed so I was hesitant to return.
We had planned to eat at Romano’s Macaroni Grill. However, the restaurant was packed so we finally opted to try Islands.
Ron ordered the Hula Burger ($10.55) which has sauteed mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onion, swiss cheese & mayo. Burgers can be ordered with either white or whole wheat buns and are served with fries.
I ordered the 1/2 rotisserie chicken ($13.25) which is served with flour tortillas, sour cream, salsa and Island slaw.
Ron’s burger was huge. He described the burger as surprisingly good. He wasn’t able to eat it all. The only negative comment regarding the food was that the fries were cold. We should have mentioned it to our server but did not.
The rotisserie chicken was hot, moist and tender with a spicy kick. The Island slaw was made without mayonnaise and was a bit tart to me. Portion sizes at Islands are generous. Our server told us a couple comes to the restaurant every Friday and orders the chicken to share.
While it took awhile for Ron to convince me to go to Islands the second time, I wouldn’t hesitate to return.
