Los Chaparros

Taco Bell is not good Mexican food.  It’s inexpensive and tasty but good it isn’t. Where can you find good Mexican food in Hawaii?

Los Chaparros Mexican Restaurant may fit the bill.  Located at 2140 S. Beretania Street, Los Chaparros is a restaurant that we passed every week going home.  Each time we drove by, we would see the parking lot full and would say to each other, we’ve got to try that restaurant one day.

We’ll one day finally arrived.  Hubby and I went to Los Chaparros for lunch.  The restaurant is clean and has a homey feel to it.  Complimentary salsa and chips is served to each table upon arrival.  The chips were not thin and the homemade salsa was spicy and good.

Sandwiches (torta) and wraps are $7.50.  Combination plates are $9 for 1 item, $13.50 for 2 items and $16.50 for 3 items.  Choices include burrito, chimichanga, enchilada, quesadilla, taquitos, sope, soft taco, tamal, tostada, chile relleno, and crispy taco.  Combo includes your choice of rice and beans or soup or house salad.  Items may also be ordered ala carte for $5.

Hubby chose the shredded beef soft taco combination plate with beans and rice.  I ordered the shredded beef chimichanga and chile relleno ala carte.

The portions were healthy and food filling.  The taste was not overpowering but good.  We weren’t able to finish everything so had enough for another meal.  While hubby liked his soft taco, after eating my chimichanga, he preferred that instead.  The chile relleno would have been enough for me.  It reminded me of the food I had when I lived in California.

Los Chaparros also caters.  Closed on Monday, Los Chaparros is open for lunch Tuesday – Sunday 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Dinner is Tuesday – Thursday and Sunday 5 – 9 p.m. and to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
