Cafe O’Lei Kihei

I like to eat good food.  Whose opinions do you rely on when you are not home?  I like to check with the concierge of a hotel or the locals but sometime people recommend places they’ve never been to.

I had heard of Cafe O’Lei before but in all our trips to Maui had never tried it. The concierge at the hotel that we stayed said she ate lunch there often. That’s the test of a good restaurant whether the people who recommend it eat there and like it.

On our last day in Maui, hubby and I decided to eat at the Cafe O’Lei Kihei. From the road, Cafe O’Lei looks small as it is on the second floor of a strip mall.  It doesn’t look impressive at all but when you walk inside, it’s like the Tartarus in Dr. Who.  It’s bigger on the inside.

I ordered the Baked Maui Onion Soup en Croute ($6.95) and hubby ordered the Crab Club Sandwich ($10.95)

The onion soup was the best onion soup that I ever had.  It was so flavorful and had lots of sweet Maui onions.  The soup was a little messy to eat but it was so good.  I highly recommend it.

Hubby’s sandwich came with Caesar Salad and was also very good. Our concierge said that she orders that when she eats at Cafe O’Lei. I ate some of hubby’s sandwich and agreed that it was very good. The Crab Club is snowcrab salad with crisp bacon, Organic greens, tomatoes, and avocado on foccacia bread.

Wish we had discovered Cafe O’Lei before our last day on Maui. Cafe O’Lei Kihei is open Tuesday though Sunday. Lunch is served from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 – 9:30 p.m. Eat there.  I think you’ll be glad you did. Lunch prices range from $6.95 $12.95. Dinner is from $16.95 – $38.95.  Service is friendly, quick and attentive.
