Hali`imaile General Store is one of Bev Gannon’s restaurants and has been a Maui fixture for over twenty years. Is it still one of Maui’s best? It depends.
Hubby & I went to Hali`imaile General Store for lunch on our way back from our trek to Haleakala National Park. It was past the peak lunch hour time but the restaurant was still full. Hubby ordered the Sashimi Napoleon ($18) and I ordered the Baby Back Ribs ($18).
Both items were excellent. The presentation of the Sashimi Napoleon with the layers of smoked salmon, Ahi tartare, sashimi Ahi, and crispy wontons with wasabi vinaigrette is so nice that you almost don’t want to eat it. Our waiter cut it up in bite size pieces. The fish was melt in your mouth delicious and the vinaigrette not overpowering. Hubby wanted to eat more when he was finished and raved over how good the appetizer was.
My Baby Back Ribs came with French fries and Asian Slaw. The ribs were also delicious, tender and flavorful and just too much for me to eat.
Our experience at Hali`imaile was very good. Dale, our waiter was friendly and attentive and our food was excellent. Reviews for the restaurant from others are mixed. Granted Hali`imaile General Store is not inexpensive and you can find less expensive places to eat.
However, if you have not tried one of Bev Gannon’s restaurants, I do recommend that you try at least one of them and decide for yourself.
The Gannon restaurants had a promotion that you would receive 20% off your Dinner with your previous receipt if you went to another one of their restaurants within 30 days. Also, check with your hotel concierge for any discount coupons.
