Japengo

Wow! In one word, that describes my experience at Japengo. Although we had to wait about 15 minutes before we were seated, the food was incredible and what a deal. Japengo’s was my final choice for this year’s Restaurant Week. Although, I’ve driven past the  Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach (2424 Kalakaua Avenue) many times, I’ve never had a desire to eat at Japengo’s. However, the menu for Restaurant Week got my interest.

The menu consisted of  a 4 course meal of 3 pieces of  White Dragon Roll sushi (california crab¦unagi¦tempura flake), Japengo Salad (togarashi spiced tuna¦nalo baby greens ¦ichiban vinaigrette), a choice of Wafu Steak or Misoyaki Local Catch, and the Japengo Coconut Crème Brulee. The menu also included a bottle of beer or a glass of Canvas Pinot Grigio or Cabernet Sauvignon and one Bottle of Sparkling or Still Water and a choice of coffee or tea.

I thought this would be the opportunity to try Japengo’s. I’m glad I did. I ordered the local catch which was misoyaki butterfish. My friends ordered the Wafu Steak. Everything that I ordered was fresh and tasty. The fish was flaky and not overcooked. The portion size of the fish was at least 6 ounces. I ate half and brought the rest home to hubby who got to enjoy it too.

My friends said that the steak was a little tough. They both ate the entire steak though.

The coconut creme brûlée which was served in a coconut shell was creamy and smooth…a perfect ending to a great meal.

Service was good too. I requested plain rice with my meal instead of chazuke which the server was able to substitute. The manager of the restaurant stopped by several times to ask how things were going and mentioned that there is a kama’aina discount of 10% but also gave us an Ohana card for 20% off the different restaurants at the Hyatt.

Parking is complimentary with receipt.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner at Japengo’s and would return again. Regular prices at Japengo are expensive so it was great that restaurant participated in Restaurant Week.  Hope they participate again next year.
