I love Restaurant Week Hawaii. I get to try different restaurants and help the Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Diamond Head at the same time.
Which restaurant would I try this year? After looking at the different menus, LS, SE, and I decided on the Wai’olu Ocean View Lounge at the Trump International Hotel at 223 Saratoga.
When I made the reservation, I was given a choice of seating at a table or on the sofa. Chose the table…it’s easier to eat.
It was pretty dark when we arrived at the restaurant so we were given little flash lights to read the menus. That was kind of a cute idea since it’s pretty dark after sunset.
Our dinner started with a trio of mini appetizers of edamame hummus, mini loco moco, and pork belly with li hi mui mango. The mini loco moco was my fave, crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. The gravy was very flavorful too.
I ordered the grilled New York Steak with blue cheese, fingerling potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. Everything was cooked perfectly but the steak was not hot. I took half my food dinner since the portion was quite large. LS and SE both had the mahimahi which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Dessert was a disappointment. It was sweet potato with apples and ice cream. The vanilla ice cream was the best part. The sweet potato was too starchy.
Service was a little slow. Our server said that since Monday was the first day of Restaurant Week, the kitchen was a little slow. The cost of our meal was $40 and worth it.
I would eat at Wai’olu again. It’s a little pricey but a nice treat.
