Luibueno’s Mexican & Seafood

I live in a concrete jungle in Hawaii. Sad but true. People all over the world travel to my home to see its beaches and experience its natural beauty. Yesterday, hubby and I decided to play tourist and drive to the North Shore since it’s been awhile.

We drove to the Dole Plantation. It’s really changed. It’s much more commercial now. No more free pineapple juice either. We walked in and walked out.

Then we drove to Haleiwa and stopped at Luibueno’s Mexican & Seafood for lunch. We saw Cholo’s television commercials before but opted for Luibueno’s which opens at 11 a.m. DR told me that the food at both Cholos and Luibueno’s are good though she loves the spicy pork at Cholo’s.

After we were seated, our server brought fresh salsa and chips. Yummy. The salsa was very good with a spicy kick. Hubby said I should lay of the chips or I wouldn’t be able to eat my lunch. Hubby and I both ordered the San Felipe Style Beer Battered Fish taco ala carte ($6.00/). I also ordered the Carne Asada taco ($6.00) ala carte.

The San Felipe Style Beer Battered Fish taco was better than the Carne Asada. The fish was fried to perfection. The fish was flaky and the batter not greasy. The taco had a kick to it too which I liked.

We didn’t finish our chips and salsa so we asked to have it to go. Our server gave us more chips.

Service was fine and the food good. Would I return? Yes. Luibueno’s has a happy hour M – F from 4 – 6 p.m. and 9:30 – 10:30 p.m. everyday. Luibueno’s (www.luibueno.com) is located at 66-165 Kamehameha Highway in Haleiwa. For reservations, call (808) 637-7717.
