I admit it. I am a carnivore. I like meat. I don’t have to have big portions but I like a good rib eye or lamb chops. I made reservations for Hy’s through opentable.com for Friday night. We arrived at the restaurant a few minutes after our reservation because of traffic. Not a problem. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and then escorted to our table which was supposed to be on the third level. We were finally seated on the first level near the grill. It’s quite cozy and private there.
Hy’s is a chain restaurant with dark wood furniture and waiters dressed to the max. Caesar and spinach salads in addition to flambé desserts are prepared tableside. Fun to watch.
RM ordered the smoked salmon appetizer ($14.95), garden salad ($8.95), and the 7 oz filet mignon ($43.95), and mango sorbet ($7.25). I ordered the half rack of lamb ($7.25).
Cheese bread was brought to our table. The first basket is complimentary. The bread was fresh, warm, and tasty.
The only glitch was my lamb which I wanted cooked medium. The server cuts the rack of lamb in front of you so he knew it was rare. He immediately took it back to the grill to cook.
Entrees come with either baked potatoes, garlic mashed potatoes, fries, or rice (white or brown) and mixed fresh vegetable. Both RM and I ordered the baked potato. Diners have a choice of butter, sour cream, bacon and/or chives with their potato. A person sitting near us ordered the mashed potatoes but asked the waiter to bring the condiments for the baked potato which I thought was an interesting idea which I may try next time.
All of our food was very good. We ate everything on our plates except the bread that came with the salmon and took nothing home. Portions at Hy’s are ample but not generous. Service was very good and attentive without being over bearing.
Dining at Hy’s was a very nice experience. That experience was expensive though. Our meal with drinks was $148 for two. That being said it was a treat. Even though we dressed up, other diners were in shorts.
Hy’s is located at 2440 Kuhio Avenue. Their phone number is (808) 922-5555. Valet parking is free. However, tips are welcome.
I would recommend dining at Hy’s for special occasions unless money is not an object. I think you will enjoy the experience. We did.
